Kinderdijk

Go back in time in an adventure full of wicks, water and willpower! From mills, steam pumping stations and mankind in the Netherlands. In Kinderdijk you stand with both feet in the middle of Dutch history. Everything is here below sea level. To keep everything dry the mills have been working for centuries with the water and the wind.

In the 13th century count Floris V of Holland commissioned the founding of water boards. With a system of ditches and waterfalls, the water was drained from the polder to the lowest point. That point is Kinderdijk. These were the first technological leap forward in the water management system.

In a stormy November night in 1421, fate struck. The infamous St. Elisabeth flood destroyed the poorly maintained dikes, causing thousands of people to drown. After the flood, when the survivors dared to go outside again, they saw a cradle floating along a dike, from which the cry of a child can be heard. According to legend, the name Kinderdijk has arisen here!

Kinderdijk is easy to reach with Waterbus 202 from Erasmusbrug, which is a 10-minute walk from our hotel in Rotterdam! You can also take bus 90 or 93 from Rotterdam Zuidplein.

Keukenhof

The history of the Keukenhof dates back to the 15th century. Countess Jacoba of Bavaria collected fruit and vegetables for the kitchen of Teylingen Castle. The Keukenhof Castle was built in 1641. It was not until 1949 that exporters and bulb growers came up with plans to make an exhibition of pre-spring flowering bulbs on the estate. That is how Keukenhof came to life. It was immediately a success, with 236,000 visitors in the first year. Romance in flowers is the theme of the 69th edition of the Keukenhof in 2018.

Keukenhof is the international and independent show window of Dutch floriculture. In eight weeks time, Keukenhof shows what it has to offer. In the park the emphasis is on the 7 million flower bulbs. In more than 20 flower shows, 500 flower growers present all their variety
